Glen Campbell

Glen is always on the lookout for ways to engage his apprentices in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. After a short training course in the latest e-learning tools, Glen was inspired to try out resource making with his students. The carefully devised activities resulted in students demonstrating their knowledge and skills in safety procedures by making their own videos. These became learning tools for other students, and sharing the videos on a wiki for peer assessment was also part of the strategy.

Glen Campbell is a Teacher, Refrigeration, at Newcastle College, TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute.

Handing over to the students

Glen had an idea he wanted to involve learners more in the learning content through group work activities. By getting groups to make videos of a safe-work procedure, he gave them ownership of the skills as well as a learning tool to check the correct procedure. This approach has been a much more effective way for his students to learn the procedure. Click the play button below.

Managing the activity and keeping the students on track

While motivation is built into the task of making a video, Glen also needs to provide a structure and guidelines to ensure students will keep on track toward assessment.

Setting up peer assessment and feedback

Collaborative resource making provides the opportunity for peer evaluation as well. Making peer evaluation count toward assessment was particularly effective for generating quality feedback amongst students.
