Colleen uses a web-based tool called Skype™ – software that lets you make free voice calls to anyone else using Skype™ as well as group chat – as a way to conference with her online students.

Colleen has adopted this means of virtual conferencing to enhance communication within her online programs using a learning-management system. Her students in e-learning are getting extra value as they are learning about a useful tool they can use in their own practice as e-learning facilitators.

Colleen Hodgins is a Coordinator and Facilitator of the Diploma of e-learning, Cairns College, TAFE Queensland – Tropical North Queensland Institute.

Real chat in real time

Colleen describes how she and students use Skype™ for more effective communication compared to a text chat facility. Real chat in real time supports a deeper level of interaction amongst students as, for example, they become more comfortable with peer-review tasks. Click the play button below.
