Discussion triggers

Tools: Blog; Commenting

Strategy: conversation; mentoring

This activity guides students to begin interacting with a blog and publishing their ideas online.

The facilitator’s blog is the central site for postings and comments in order to create a dialogue around topics or issues. The facilitator makes regular (say weekly) postings on a topic and asks a question to trigger/invite the opinions or comments from students. A posting could refer to a resource or website that you want students to read.

Let students know they can comment or express opinions on the topic freely and there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ comments.

Encourage students to visit the blog at least once a week and leave a comment in relation to your new message or the comments of peers. Respond to comments as you make your next posting and keep inviting responses with questions.

Explore a topic or build on an idea by encouraging more peer comments in relation to existing comments, a new question and so on.

Students’ comments could be written or verbal (as an audio recording) if the blog tool provides audio commenting, although asking students to leave a recorded comment may present more of a challenge to them.

The concept for this activity has been sourced from an interview with Rosa Ochoa, August 3, 2007.
